Food for thought – Where I have been – Ep3. Malaysia

To experience Malaysia is to embrace a beautiful, unforced simplicity. Malaysia offers an uncomplicated harmony that is both deeply comforting and richly stimulating. Our family was lucky enough to live in Malaysia from 2017-2023. For expatriates, particularly from India, Malaysia presents an exceptionally soft landing. Life here is easy not through extravagance, but through seamless functionality. The infrastructure is robust. All our necessities like world-class healthcare, extraordinary private education, high-speed internet and clean water are widely accessible and mostly affordable. From the spectacular Thaipusam festival at the Batu Cave to the daily rituals in the many beautiful temples, religious and cultural life is visible and vibrant. The presence of Deepavali as a national holiday and the sound of Tamil in local markets highlight a deep-seated acceptance.

The term “Malay” likely originates from a classical Sumatran kingdom, “Melayu.” When the federation expanded to include Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo alongside the existing states of the Malay Peninsula in 1963, “Malaysia” was born. Peninsular Malaysia is a breathtaking canvas of eternal greenery. The drives from the capital through rolling hills in rainforests and palm plantations makes this country my favourite for long drives. Each city offers a distinct flavour. Kuala Lumpur is the dynamic heart which has the iconic Petronas Towers but also accommodates the bustling street markets and aromatic food stalls. Putrajaya, the administrative capital, is an architectural marvel of grand mosques and serene lakes. Up north, Penang is a living heritage and culinary paradise. On the island of Borneo, Kota Kinabalu offers a different rhythm, with its stunning sunsets, gateway to Mount Kinabalu, and the unparalleled biodiversity of Sabah’s rainforests.

Malaysia’s unique constitutional monarchy, with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (the King) as its pinnacle, adds a layer of captivating tradition. Ultimately, Malaysia’s beauty lies in this effortless integration. Think about it: Malaysia is a nation where several religions co-exist in a balance. This foundational stability frees one to enjoy the country’s true wealth: its people and its environment. It is a nation that asks not for assimilation from expats, but for appreciation—a simple, profound offer that makes life easy and rewarding. Malaysia is Truly Asia!
